Learn about our charity status and parent committee

Winshill Preschool is a registered charity, which means that all of the money we receive goes directly into running the preschool, improving facilities, and providing high-quality care and learning for the children — rather than making a profit. Being a charity allows us to focus on the best interests of the children and families.

Our preschool is also run by a parent committee. This means that parents and carers play an active role in helping to manage the preschool, make key decisions, and shape how the setting is run. The committee works alongside the staff to:

Oversee the preschool's finances and budget.

Support fundraising activities to improve resources and facilities.

Ensure the preschool operates safely, effectively, and in line with regulations.

Represent the views of families and help create a welcoming community for everyone.

Being a charity and parent committee-run preschool gives families a real voice in the running of the setting and ensures that decisions are always made with the children's best interests at heart. It also encourages strong connections between families, staff, and the local community, making Winshill Preschool a truly supportive and inclusive place for all.

How we support our children with SEND

At Winshill Preschool, we are committed to creating an inclusive environment where every child can thrive. We work closely with families and professionals to ensure that children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) receive the support they need to reach their full potential.

Early Identification and Support

We use the Graduated Approach (Assess, Plan, Do, Review) to identify and support children's needs early. For children with more complex requirements, we collaborate with external specialists to ensure tailored support.

Speech and Language Support (SALT)

Children with communication difficulties receive specialist support through Speech and Language Therapists (SALT). We follow their recommendations, providing targeted activities and strategies to help children develop confidence and communication skills.

Visual and Hearing Impairments

We provide tailored support for children with visual or hearing impairments, working with specialist teachers and advisory services. This may include adapted resources, seating arrangements, hearing aids support, or visual aids, ensuring all children can fully access learning and play opportunities.

Individual Plans and Inclusion Funding

For children with significant or complex needs, we may work with Staffordshire County Council on an Education, Health and Care Needs Assessment (EHCNA), which can lead to an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). We also access Early Years SEND Inclusion Funding to provide extra resources, equipment, or additional staff support, so every child can participate fully in all activities.

How we support our families

We work with a range of local professionals, including autism and sensory support teams, occupational therapists, educational psychologists, family support (Malachi), SALT specialists, and teachers for visual and hearing impairments. Parents and carers are central to the process, with regular communication and shared strategies to support learning at home and in preschool.

Our approach ensures that every child at Winshill Preschool feels included, supported, and valued, giving them the confidence to learn, play, and grow.

The Key-Person system

At Winshill Preschool, every child is assigned a key person — a dedicated member of staff who builds a close, caring relationship with them and their family. The key person helps your child feel safe, confident, and valued, supporting their emotional wellbeing and individual learning needs.

They are your main point of contact for sharing updates, progress, and any concerns. This strong partnership between home and preschool ensures every child receives personalised care and support, helping them thrive in their early learning journey.

Online Safety and Data Protection Policies

Safeguarding Children policy

We are committed to keeping every child safe, protected, and valued. Safeguarding is the responsibility of all staff and volunteers in our setting.

Children's welfare comes first.

We follow safer recruitment procedures and all staff hold up-to-date DBS checks and safeguarding training.

Our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) oversees all safeguarding concerns and works with children's social care and other agencies when needed.

Staff are trained to recognise signs of abuse, neglect, exploitation, and online risks and will report concerns immediately—we do not promise confidentiality if a child may be at risk.

We maintain secure records and follow the latest EYFS and local safeguarding partnership guidance.

We work in partnership with parents and professionals to support children's safety and wellbeing.

We promote a safe, nurturing environment where children are listened to, respected, and protected.

Healthy Eating & Nutrition policy

We promote healthy eating and support children in developing positive lifelong food habits, in line with the EYFS 2025 Health and Wellbeing requirements.

  • We provide nutritious snacks and drinks that meet current dietary and allergy guidelines.
  • Parents are asked to send healthy, balanced lunchboxes – no sweets, chocolate bars, fizzy drinks or choking-risk foods.
  • All food provided or brought into the setting must follow our allergy and choking prevention policy. We are a nut-aware setting and adapt for individual dietary needs.
  • Drinking water is available at all times and children are encouraged to stay hydrated.
  • Staff model healthy choices, good table manners and positive mealtime social interactions.
  • We support children's independence, allowing them to pour drinks, try new foods and make safe choices.
  • All staff receive food hygiene and allergy awareness training to ensure safe preparation, serving, and supervision.
  • Cultural and medical dietary needs are respected, with individual health care plans where required.
  • We encourage parents to work with us to build consistent healthy habits between home and preschool.
